Located on DuSable Street within Peoria, the African American Museum Hall of Fame celebrates the contributions of African Americans in the areas of art, history, science, law enforcement, humanities, and literature. Each year the AAHFM sponsors two major community events: the Black Arts Festival, a talent showcase and art fair, affording African Americans artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and artwork as well as connect with the buying public, and the Red, Black, and Green Ball held annually in April, recognizing and celebrating notable achievements and contribution to the African American Community.
The museum features an Oral History Center, a comprehensive exhibit on the life and times of Richard Pryor, and many other exhibits, programs, lectures, poetry readings and other cultural events that are held to enlighten the public. The Contemporary Art Center on South West Water Street is Peoria's cultural hub featuring art exhibitions, artist studios, art instruction, comedy improv, poetry nights, yoga and tai chi classes, jazz and blues performances. The Contemporary Art Center exhibits the work of living artists at the forefront of their fields. About 20 resident artists are constantly creating art on-site as well as prolific artist and co-founder Preston Jackson continues to maintain his sculpture and painting studio. The Lakeview Museum of Arts & Sciences is the largest private downstate museum features art and science exhibitions, children’s Discovery Center, Planetarium, Illinois Folk Art Gallery, Illinois River Decoy and Illinois Jacquard Coverlet exhibitions, the Museum Store, and more. The Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday from noon – 5 pm. Admission is $6 for adults, and seniors and students from 3 – 17 are $4. The Peoria Art Guild on Harrison exhibits the artwork of local, regional, national and international artists, and offers their work for sale or rent. However, its main purpose is education. The Peoria Art Guild offers classes for all ages at all skill levels as well as special workshops and seminars. With several community outreach programs, The Peoria Art Guild also plays an important part in helping thousands of children gain valuable life skills. | The Wheels O' Time Museum is located 8 miles north of downtown Peoria on Route 40. The museum features displays of vintage and classic autos, gas engines, fire engines, airplanes, tractors, musical instruments, juke boxes, toys, dolls, animated miniature circus, and many “hands-on” displays.
