The 34th Annual Congressional Art Show will take place in the Peoria Public Library Main Library Gallery during normal library hours through Friday.  Entries from high school students from the 18th Congressional District will be exhibited. The work on display will represent a variety of mediums. The winning entry will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.For more information, visit www.peoriapubliclibrary.org
Money Smart Week 2015 continues throughout the Peoria area through Saturday featuring financial classes intended to improve money management skills throughout the community offered to area residents at no cost. Smoke on the Mountain opens tonight (Thursday) at the Barn 2 Dinner Theatre in Goodfield and plays through June 7. The 2015 Annual Arts In Education Spring Celebration continues every weekday through May 22 at the Peoria County Courthouse Plaza beginning at 11 am each day. Celebrating the talents of Pre-K through 12th grade students from seven Central Illinois counties, over 12,000 students perform, exhibit, and demonstrate their talents in the fine arts and applied arts during the six-week event. The Illinois Valley Fuller Center for Housing will host a Flapjack Fundraiser at the Peoria Applebees (located at 3629 N War Memorial Drive in Peoria) on Saturday from 8 am - 10 am. Tickets are $5 and includes bacon, pancakes, orange juice and coffee. Proceeds will be used for home repair projects for Central Illinois Veterans. The Keep Peoria Beautiful Great American Cleanup will take place on Saturday from 9 am - Noon. Volunteers can help by recruiting a team to clean up any area where litter has collected. Trash bags, yard waste bags and gloves can be picked up from 8 -10 am at Glen Oak Learning Center (located at 2100 N. Wisconsin in Peoria). Trash and landscape bags can go out with the weekly garbage pickup; electronic waste (anything with a plug), batteries and tires will be collected at the Glen Oak Learning Center and recycled safely. In addition, PNC Bank will have a shredding truck available at the East Bluff Community Center (located at 512 E. Kansas in Peoria) for anyone needing to shred papers. To celebrate Peoria's 180th birthday, the Peoria Historical Society will host its 2nd Annual Spring Showcase at the Peoria Civic Center Ballroom on Sunday beginning with a Spring Boutique at 1 pm and followed by entertainment at 3 pm. This year's event is entitled "You Are There" and will feature Illinois State Senator Dave Koehler, City Councilman Ryan Spain and other well-known local leaders portraying the original founders of the community. Refreshments and desserts will be served, along with a cash bar. Tickets are $40 per person or $400 per table of 10. The Central Illinois Youth Symphony will present its Spring Orchestral Concerts on Sunday from 2 - 4 pm at Metamora Township High School (located at 101 W. Madison St. in Metamora). Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth. At 2 pm, the Preparatory Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble will perform and at 4 pm, the Youth Symphony featuring soloist Mallika Patel on flute will perform. Featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Holst, Sibelius, Borodin and more, admission is valid for both concerts.
The Orpheus Club of Peoria Spring Concert will take place at the United Presbyterian Church (located at 2400 W. Northmoor in Peoria) on Sunday beginning at 3 pm. Under the direction of Aaron Ganschow, this male voice four part harmony will be singing such as "The Prayer" , "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "On a Clear Day" and more. Admission is $5 at the door. There are no reserved seats.
Rosewater, written & directed by Jon Stewart, will be presented in partnership with Peoria Area World Affairs Council at the Peoria Riverfront Museum Giant Screen Theatre on Sunday beginning at 4 pm with a Skype Q & A with Maziar Bahari, the showing of the movie at 4:30 pm and a showing of the documentary by Maziar Bahari "To Light a Candle" at 6:45 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for senior citizens or students and $8 for youth up to 17 and are available in advance at www.peoriariverfrontmuseum.org or at the door.
